Their parents were one of the defining celebrity couples of the ’90sl but Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere had never actually met until they were cast together in The Shards.

Despite the shared history, the two aren’t step-siblings, half-siblings, or related in any way. Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford split in 1995, and both actors were born to their parents’ later marriages: Gerber, 24, to Crawford and Rande Gerber; Gere, 26, to Richard Gere and Carey Lowell.

The pair finally crossed paths at a cast hangout about two weeks before filming began, and both say they cleared the air about the family connection right away.

“It’s really funny,” Homer said. “From the inside, it’s really normal. She’s become a really close friend.” Gerber, for her part, called him “the greatest scene partner ever,” and when the subject of their parents came up, she waved it away with a breezy “What connection?”

On screen, Gerber plays Susan Reynolds, a student-body president and the longtime best friend of Bret Easton Ellis, whose 2023 novel the series adapts. Ellis suggested her for the role, and Ryan Murphy agreed. Gere plays Robert Mallory, the mysterious new student who arrives just as a serial killer begins targeting teens.

Created by Ellis and Murphy, the show is set in 1981 Los Angeles at an elite prep school. It premieres August 5 on FX and Hulu, opening with two episodes and rolling out weekly after that. Cindy Crawford turned up at the July 27 New York premiere to cheer on her daughter.
