Katy Perry’s “Worst Dressed” Met Gala Look Was Smarter Than You Think

By

Katy Perry returned to the Met Gala in a white Stella McCartney gown that layered five references in one look: her Blue Origin flight, her next single, the night’s “Fashion Is Art” theme, AI deepfakes of her, and the viewer’s own reflection.

The white Stella McCartney gown was a literal “blank canvas” for the night’s “Fashion Is Art” theme. The mask reflected viewers back at themselves. The glove had six fingers, mocking AI deepfakes of her. The bottom of the train was scorched as a preview of her upcoming single, “Watch It Burn.” On the steps, she held up a tarot card that read “Commit to the bit.”

The dress was cut from Italian deadstock duchess satin, a fabric pulled from surplus stock so the gown was made entirely from existing material. The construction included mesh panels at the sides and a reverse basque cut at the bodice, with a long train edged in browned, frayed scorch marks. Some fans read the burned hem as a post-divorce metaphor.

The mask was made by Serbian artist Miodrag Guberinic. It was a chrome face shield mounted over a mesh coif, sculpted to fit her head. Per the press release, the headpiece was “designed to be a literal and symbolic reflection that invites the observer to consider that their perception of others can mirror their own internal world, and conversely mask truth.” In practice: when you looked at her face, you saw yourself reflected back. The mask also doubled as a nod to her April 2025 Blue Origin space flight alongside Lauren Sánchez.

The six-finger glove was a direct reference to AI-generated images, where extra fingers are one of the most recognizable signs of a fake. AI Met Gala photos of Perry have circulated for years, including in 2025 when she wasn’t even there and had to publicly debunk the fakes on Instagram. Ahead of the gala, she also collaborated with the artist @sailkatycat on a set of AI-style renderings of the actual look, dropping them publicly before her arrival.

She made the reveal a moment of its own. On her way up the steps, she pulled out a tarot card showing The Magician. She held up another that read “Commit to the bit.” Then she opened the visor. She finished the look with metallic teeth grills.

She posed with Heated Rivalry actor Connor Storrie, who held a hand over his face to mirror her concealed look.

Her last Met Gala was 2022, in an Oscar de la Renta dress that ran short at the front and long at the back. She missed 2025. She was on her Lifetimes Tour.

The outfit pulled together five layered references in one look: her space flight, her next single, the “Fashion Is Art” theme, AI deepfakes of her, and the audience’s own perception. People who caught the references called it one of the strongest concepts of the night.
