Everything That Happened The First Time I Saw Drag
So I went to my first drag event a couple of nights ago with some friends. It was interesting, to say the least.
Warning: I know very little about drag and all it entails, so I will try to keep my naivety brief.
So I went to my first drag event a couple of nights ago with some friends. It was interesting, to say the least. In fact, this drag event happened to be a Drag Pageant. This event showcased many formerly known drag queens, along with a few newbies getting their first experiences performing.
The event took place at South Beach, a gay nightclub in Houston, Texas. It was pretty small and scrunched (from my perspective) and I didn’t expect to see so many people there once the show started, but people love their drag! These women came out looking so beautiful and polished. It was clear that they put a lot of time and energy into this. Turns out, Naomi Smalls from the show RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 was there performing herself, along with Kim Chi from season 8 as well.
I haven’t watched much of the show (RuPaul), except various times with a friend. However, it seems like any other show where contestants compete for a pretty penny.
The host (I cannot remember her name for the life of me) was the most humorous person I’ve ever met! She had the audience laughing most of the time at her witty remarks. I find it very interesting that most drag queens come with a type of humor when they perform or speak. Is that a part of drag itself or is that just something they bring to the table?
Anyway. Not only were there drag queens competing, but there were drag kings as well! Correct me if I’m wrong, but these are typically women who dress up as men with exaggerated personalities. A funny thing I remembered about the event was one of the drag kings coming out appearing oh-so mysterious and sexy. He came out on stage and started dancing to Chris Brown’s “Take You Down” and then proceeded into the audience to dance with other people!
Additionally, the contestants received quite a bit of tips as their performing was A-One.
Most of the contestants came from behind a red curtain, walked around on/off stage to show off their outfits and then answered a specific question given by the host to the other contestants. I cannot remember the exact wording, but the question followed along the lines of: “Life opens many, many doors when it comes to believing in yourself. So, tell us, when did you start believing in yourself?”
Each of the contestants answered this question based off of their personal experiences — and honestly, I wasn’t dissatisfied with either of their responses. They all did a great job and I want to give kudos to them for believing in their selves and pursuing something in which truly allows them to thrive.Unfortunately, we did not stay to find out who was crowned the winner of the competition because everyone wanted to visit a nearby club a street or so over. However, I really did enjoy myself. And I encourage anyone who hasn’t been to a drag event to attend one ASAP. True entertainment.
