People are constantly asking me why I only wear black. Someone once even went as far as to call me “that bitch in the black”. I mean, that’s harsh, but not entirely untrue. I like to wear black for a number of reasons. Sometimes I can explain it, other times I can’t. It mostly just makes me feel good. When I actually sit down and compile a list this is what I can come up with:

1. Keeping it classy

I believe that black is a sign of maturity. Every season has their “on trend” colors. I prefer to be able to frame a picture of my friends and I on vacation without having to say, “Oh, that was the dreaded summer of the salmon and teal combo that actually looked like a 1980s plastic kitchen set.” If you stick to neutral colors like black and cream, it is a lot easier to keep your pictures looking timeless. You will be able to explain less and focus more on the reminders of your long-lasting friendships.

2. More cost efficient

I often invest in nice pieces of clothing and accessories. If you purchase them in black, you can wear them much more often. You won’t be asking yourself, “Why did I just spend $395 on this Kate Spade neon bag that I can only wear once before becoming ‘the girls with the neon purse’”. You are better off opting for the black leather bag and add color with the accessories that are lower in cost. There are plenty of colorful items on the sale rack at Target that will give you the boost that you need if you are feeling generous without bankrupting you.

3. Mystery

If you show up to a meeting wearing bright colors it says, “I’m vulnerable and easy to manipulate.” If instead you walk through the door in all black with a sleek pony, it’s intimidating. You look serious and ready to make some serious statements. People may start to look at you and think, “She doesn’t say much, but when she does, people listen.” You are the Matthew Mcconaughey of the streets, the spokesperson for Dos Equis, and North West of every preschool.

4. Black is slimming

Wearing black makes a woman feel slim. Slim means confident and confident women rule the world, Look at Bey. Black clothes result in smooth lines and a smaller silhouette. Did you ever notice that a black cat is hard to photograph? It’s the same thing as photographing a lady in black because you cannot see as many imperfections. Unless of course, you mess around with the Hefe filter.

5. Easy transition

Wearing all black means that you can be versatile. An all black outfit is a chic canvass with multiple possibilities. You can easily leave work wearing black riding pants with boots and transition to a business-casual happy hour downtown. You can dress it down by throwing on a big scarf to run errands or you can dress yourself up by putting on heels with a statement necklace. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
