You know, all along, that this is someone with a heart in shards, a soul in pieces, and little affection and warmth and stability to give you — you won’t blame them for it, they need all the resources they can give themselves — yet you still try.

Be sure to take lots of Instagram photos! It’s like that old Tao-ist expression goes: if you take a vacation to a beach in Mexico and don’t photograph yourself in a bikini, did you even vacation?

Settling for subpar food or something you didn’t order because your greatest life fear is getting someone to spit in your food in that back kitchen.

It’s not that you’re overtly looking to doom your relationship, either, but sometimes, going with the flow is counterproductive to actually getting anywhere.

They are open to advice and help from those who have been there before — but also that they know when to shut their ears off from detractors and people who doubt them and would love to see them fail.

You were the classmate they never passed that note to. The coworker they never chased because they feared the taboo of dating in the workplace. The friend of a friend. The friend’s ex, and therefore coded as off-limits forever.
