“Detox. Deflate. Destress. Breathe. Live. Smile.”

We read all these articles about detoxing our body, but rarely anybody says anything about how an individual’s mental wellness is connected to physical wellness. “Adulting” as famous YouTuber Arden Rose likes to call it, can be pretty challenging. The countless responsibilities thrown in our direction in this extremely cut-throat and fast-paced world can extract our energy and leave us in a state of constant exhaustion – both emotional and physical. It’s very important for people to squeeze some time out of their busy schedules to reflect upon their lives and introspect.

The system of this world encourages us to be more like robots rather than living beings so here are certain ways in which you can feel like a fully functioning human being again –

1. Get Off Social Media.

This is the hardest step but the most significant one. Scrolling mindlessly through hundreds of posts in a day is not relaxation, it’s just a distraction. For a person to be able to stop living in this vicious bubble of the society, he/she needs to take a break from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on. According to reports, an average human being spends more than nine hours a day on these social networking platforms. By taking a break from this, you can buy some time for yourself, and if you wish to connect with others, you can just go out and meet them face-to-face or instead you can have a visual conversation on Skype, which is still more personal than the others, as you do not hide behind a screen. Mobile phones and laptops are just rectangular escapes.

2. Own A Plant And Take Care Of It.

The process of inner growth is more or less like how a flower blooms. It starts from a dirty place but with time, patience, water and sunlight – it grows into something breathtakingly beautiful. The process of taking care of a plant is very therapeutic as it allows people to experience what I like to call “healthy stillness”.For example, while watering a plant, try to be in that moment and not think about all the emotional burdens that live in your mind under normal circumstances.

3. Breathing Exercises.

Light up a scented candle or an incense stick and inhale the fragrance. As you inhale, imagine you’re taking in all the positive energy that the world has to offer and as you exhale, imagine that you’re breathing out all the reasons because of which you are stressed and anxious. It helps in calming your nerves down. And you can do it for at least 10 minutes in a day. Make sure your eyes are closed as you do it, once you open them, the world around you will start to appear renewed.

4. Take Long Walks and Absorb.

When was the last time you went out on a walk and actually noticed the trees, plants, people and other little things around you? I’m guessing it was a long time ago. We’re always in a hurry to go somewhere, be with someone, or do something. We’re so impatient to reach the destination that we completely forget about how filling the journey can be. So go out, and notice the little details of life and let it leave an imprint. When you’re more aware of your surroundings, you’re more aware of your body and once you’re aware of your body, you’re aware of your mind – and all of this together makes you feel alive.

5. Let Go Of Toxic People.

If someone really wants to stay in your life, he or she will find a way to do so. You don’t have to constantly chase people and experiences. You are what you surround yourself with, so if you’re surrounded by people who like to complain and whine about all the things that are wrong in life, it will leave a negative impact on you. If the hours of leisure are spent in thinking about how unfair everything is, then your subconscious mind will accept this to be the truth, and it will affect your overall view about the world. You would find it hard to relax even if your body is in a state of absolute relaxation. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
