This Is What It Really Means To Be A Girl Boss, Because It’s More Than Just Hustling

Girl Boss

The startup scene is hot right now, and I am a female entrepreneur and digital marketer just making my way through it. I always put my passion, energy, heart, and hustle into my work. I am a self-starter, and I like to get sh*t done without the help of others. According to society, I am a girl boss.

But what does being a ‘girl boss’ really mean? It’s an ambiguous term but, to me, this is what it means to be a girl boss.

Being a girl boss means working hard, but knowing when to take a break. Deadlines need to be met, products need to be launched, and business needs to grow — I get it. But working around the clock and burning the midnight oil doesn’t necessarily make you more driven or successful than other entrepreneurs. And taking a break or even an entire work-day off doesn’t make you lazy or less ambitious than other entrepreneurs. There will obviously be busy days, and late nights catching up on work. But there’s a time and place for everything. If you want to truly be successful, you need to place value on your health and well-being.

Being a girl boss is about collaboration. It’s about supporting other entrepreneurs and lifting each other up. I am naturally a very competitive person, but I am also very giving, supportive, and team-oriented. I truly believe in collaboration over competition. Collaboration increases creativity and efficiency. It allows you to network and form meaningful relationships. But above all, it generates positive energy and spreads kindness. So while you’re building yourself up, don’t tear other people down — we can crash glass ceilings together. I know it’s cliché, but it’s true: teamwork makes the dream work.

Being a girl boss is about being strong yet vulnerable. It’s about being fearless yet cautious. It’s about being unapologetically confident in yourself and your abilities. It’s about ending girl-on-girl crime, and empowering other women. It’s about being humble. It’s about being fiercely passionate and ambitious.

So go chase your dreams. My money’s on you.
