She watches him tenderly, engages him openly, and gives of herself freely. Now a mother herself, she tells me, she wants to give her boy the mother she has. What she fails to realize is she already did.

“Honestly, y’all can keep your change. I just need a smile today. Can someone please just give me a smile?” Through my music, my stream of consciousness inner monologue, and the sounds of the city, my heart breaks. Removing both earbuds this time, I turn on my heel to see him sitting on his bucket, smiling out with open arms, simply asking for the return of human compassion.

Despite knowing me a great deal, he chose someone else. He had his reasons; maybe it was about me, maybe it was about his other option, more than likely it was about both and more. But, here’s the spoiler and the best part, it doesn’t matter.

When I saw Adele’s cover art, I was struck by the uninhibited joy written all over her face; across that toothless grin, happiness radiates. While I hope we all show joy on our adult faces, from time to time, it’s rarely that authentic.

When five of you, late 20’s, plaid-wearing, low-laughing, beer-clinking, arm-shoving guys stumbled out onto the porch, my immediate reaction was run. But then I told myself to relax. It’s a party. They just came out on the porch; it’s a nice night, this isn’t about you. But then there was the laughing, their deep dude voices getting louder and cutting through the ambiance of my music.
