This 18-Year-Old Bashed His Grandmother To Death Because She Took His Beer

“She took the beer and he just flipped out and I guess she wouldn’t tell him where she put it, so he started punching holes in the wall, then destroying the house pretty much and then blaming her."

Police walked into a bloody and violent scene when they arrived at the Courson residence in Jacksonville, Florida. Large, gaping holes had been smashed into the walls and 69-year-old Joyce Ann Courson was laying in a pool of her own blood.

They were responding to a domestic disturbance that arouse when Joyce Courson took and hid beer belonging to her grandson, Dylan Nicholas Broughman.

When Dylan Broughman was in the shower around 8:00am on October 10th, his grandmother took his beer and hid it somewhere in the house. When he exited the shower and attempted to locate his beer, he became enraged. He screamed that, “It’s all your fault, everything is your fault!” at his grandmother, and became very violent toward her and the home.

Courson told much of this story as she laid on her deathbed at a local hospital:

From her hospital bed, Courson told them her grandson caved in chunks of the walls and shoved her to the floor as he followed her into a hallway, the report said. That’s when he held her down and punched her in the face with his fist over and over again, then started kicking her. (Source)

Dillon Ross, a roommate in the same house as Courson and Broughman told the story like this:

“She took the beer and he just flipped out and I guess she wouldn’t tell him where she put it, so he started punching holes in the wall, then destroying the house pretty much and then blaming her,” Ross said. “I didn’t think anything of it until I heard this ridiculous crash. That’s when it was like this turned into something crazy. After the crash, I heard the grandmother screaming for help.”

Ross said he ran into the foyer and found Courson on the floor, and the 18-year-old was gone. (Source)

The vicious attack left the elderly Courson with severe cuts, bruises all over her body. After a week of treatment she succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Dylan Broughman’s mother — and Courson’s daughter — has expressed much heartbreak over the tragedy, but seeks mercy for her son who apparently suffers from behavior deficits:

“I am sick for the loss of my mother. I am sick for the loss of my son. I don’t feel he deserves to go to prison. I don’t feel in my heart that he meant to do this to the severity that he did, it’s just so hard. I am so emotional. I am lost without Mom. We were everything together.”

Police had found Broughman the evening of the murder and took him into custody. He is awaiting a trial on the charges of aggravated battery and murder. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
