Nearly three decades after Practical Magic cast its spell, Joey King and Maisie Williams are stepping into the Owens family as Sandra Bullock’s grown-up daughters in a sequel that hands the next generation of witches its magic.

The two actors said joining a cast that includes Bullock and Nicole Kidman was “a little bit terrifying.” Almost 30 years after the original, they’re the next generation of Owens witches learning about their magic.

King plays Kylie and Williams plays Antonia, the grown-up daughters of Bullock’s Sally Owens, who discover their supernatural ancestry the way Sally and her aunt Gillian (Kidman) did in the 1998 film. Evan Rachel Wood played young Kylie in the original.

The sequel is directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box) and based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing return as aunts Jet and Frances, with Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod joining the cast. It hits theaters September 11, 2026.

The Owens family curse (the one that kills the men they love) is still in play. The trailer shows Kylie trying to fix it herself and ending up on a darker path, with the sisters and aunts chasing after her to confront where their magic came from.

King and Williams talked about the roles onstage at the 2026 Teen Vogue Fest with Vogue’s Chloe Malle. “You never stop learning and growing from people you work with, so getting to learn and grow from Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman was fun and a little overwhelming,” Williams said.

King wasn’t born yet when the original came out. She first saw it at 9 or 10 and remembers being scared before it turned into a rewatchable favorite. Williams watched it with her mom, and it still brings back happy childhood memories.

The generations swapped lessons too: King and Williams taught Bullock and Kidman “wig,” and Bullock taught them “6,7.” There’s a group chat where the veterans hype up their younger co-stars as leading ladies and producers.
For the press run, the actors said they’ll lean into ’90s, witchy, and ethereal looks, with Williams describing Antonia’s on-screen style as more ’50s. “A lot of lace, whimsical colors… the colors in this movie are so gorgeous,” King said.
