Lots of horror fans claim that their personal favorite is “the scariest movie of all time” but now one movie has the backing of actual measurable evidence!

A UK website did a study in which they were able to monitor the heart rate of participants while they watched popular horror films in surround sound. The participants had an average resting heart rate of 65 bpm and topped out at 86 bpm while watching the scariest selection. Movies shown to participants included: Insidious, The Conjuring, Hereditary, Paranormal Activity, It Follows, Sinister, The Conjuring 2, The Babadook, The Descent, The Visit, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream.

The movie that consistently gave people the highest elevated heart beat? Sinister!

Sinister is a unique horror movie about a pagan diety named Bughuul.

True crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves his family into a house made available because the entire family was murdered under mysterious circumstances. In the home’s attic, Oswalt finds a box of 8mm films containing snuff films about multiple families who were annihilated in particularly gruesome ways. Oswalt becomes spooked and moves his family out of the house. Later, he is warned that the murdered families are connected by all having lived in the home of a previously murdered family before moving away.

It’s also one of those rare horror movies that has a kick ass sequel.

Sinister 2 takes place in a different murder house where a woman on the run from her abusive ex is living with her two young boys. The boys discover the tapes and Bughuul and are pressured to take part in the family annihilation ritual. Their mother and a sympathetic Sheriff’s deputy race to keep the family safe from dangers both real and paranormal.

Probably the scariest part of each film are the death montages of previous families:
