It's a great weekend to let go of a past relationship.

The moon is one of the most powerful forces in our world. It affects gravity, the tides, and bodies’ monthly cycles. Each part of the lunar calendar evokes a different kind of energy. You can perform a moon spell or ritual that coincides with the current lunar phase.

This weekend (the weekend of June 8, 2018) the moon will be in last quarter and waning crescent. Here’s a quick primer on the energy that each phase of the moon creates:

New Moon: Closure.

Waxing Crescent: Setting intentions or starting a new project.

1st Quarter: Attracting money, love, etc.

Waxing Gibbous: Re-energizing something you have already started.

Full Moon: The most powerful moon phase. Will put oomph behind whatever you need.

Waning Gibbous: Cleansing.

3rd Quarter: Removing blocked energy.

Waning Crescent: Letting go of feelings for someone or something.

This weekend is an excellent time for letting go of feelings you have for someone or something and removing obstacles in the way of your progress toward any desired outcome. Below are three moon spells (also called moon rituals) you can use to help you toward these goals. Before you begin read some advice on preparing for your moon ritual here.

Moon bath

The waning moon this weekend is an ideal time for a detoxing moon bath. This can be as symbolic or as ritual-filled as you want it to be. The necessary ingredients are only that you spend time and attention preparing and enjoying your bath.

While you draw your bath you should take time to take a few deep breaths in and out to shift your energy from the business of the day to this special time of your moon bath. On a sheet of paper, write down in the present tense the goal you hope will be accomplished by your moon bath. For instance, if your goal is to no longer feel emotionally invested in your ex, write down: I feel free of feelings when X’s name comes up in conversation. If your goal is to stop stalking someone on social media, write down: I am free of curiosity regarding X. You can write down as many of these sentences as are helpful.

Pour 2 cups of epsom salts in the bath. If you have some dried sage available, burn some or crinkle some leaves into the water. You can also add some essential oil if you’d like. Rest in the water and envision your feelings and strong emotions regarding the situation you would like to move on from draining out of your body. Know that when you emerge from the bath you will be leaving those feelings behind.

A Candle Spell

You will need:

  • Blue candle and lighter/matches
  • photo of the person you would like to let go of
  • fireproof dish
  • dried white sage

Take a photo of the person you would like to let go of and set it on fire. Place it in a fireproof dish or bowl and watch it burn. While it is burning say In the light of this moon I move forward and leave my attachments behind. The part of me that holds on to you is now free. I release you.

When the photo is ash, light the dried sage and perform a sage smudging on your body. Then, light the blue candle and burn it for the rest of the night until you prepare for bed. Burn it each following night until the candle is gone.

Waning Moon Meditation

If you’re wearing of a “moon bath” or doing an actual spell, you can try something as simple as a special moon meditation.

Sit in a dark room in a comfortable space — especially one where you can see some kind of moonlight. Do a meditation specifically for goals best manifested during the waning moon, like this one:

Whatever you do this weekend, take a moment to gaze up at the moon and feel a moment of gratitude for everything you have in life. Happy moon watching! Thought Catalog Logo Mark
