Maybe You’re Not Ready To Settle Down (And Maybe That’s Beautiful)

Let go of everything that isn’t what feels right in both your head but also in your heart.

Everyone else is doing it. Almost every single person around you is either in a committed relationship or taking the steps they need to do to find one. It seems that everyone’s priorities have changed and that there must be something wrong with you for not wanting the same.

It’s confusing. It makes you wonder what is wrong in your own head that you seem to find it in you to want to settle down. Sure, part of you really loves the sound of it, but when it comes down to it, you just aren’t quite ready to give up your single girl ways.

And that’s okay.

It’s okay to not be ready to make someone else your everything. It’s okay to be selfish. And it’s DEFINITELY okay to use this part of your life to focus on yourself, your needs and becoming the very best version of YOU, before you bring someone else into it.

There is nothing wrong with being the girl that takes her time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy your youth a little longer while waiting for the right person to come around who may just so happen to change your ways. Maybe that’s just it; maybe the reason that this has been so difficult is for the sole reason that you just haven’t met the right person yet.

That being said, right person or not, you aren’t ready. You aren’t ready to make sacrifices that contribute to somebody else’s happiness. You aren’t ready to commit yourself to only one more person for the remainder of time. You definitely aren’t ready to change your ways to better accommodate the needs of someone else.

Maybe it sounds selfish, but isn’t that what your twenties are for? Aren’t these supposed to be your selfish years? This is supposed to be the time in your life that is all about you. This is the period of time that is solely based on figuring out who you are, what you want, and what you need to do to get that. Your life is just starting, there is no way you could have this all figured out yet.

So forget what everyone around you is doing. Forget what is supposed to be “normal.” Let go of every stigma that society is putting in your head and do what makes YOU happy. Put behind you every word that your loved ones are telling you to make you feel like you have to settle down young if you have any chance at real love and happiness. Let go of everything that isn’t what feels right in both your head but also in your heart.

You aren’t ready. Not now at least.

That isn’t saying that you will never be. That isn’t saying that you’re damaged. All that is saying is that you are waiting for the person to come around to change your mind. All it is saying is that you are patiently waiting to be in a place where you are able to give someone your all, and give both you and them, exactly what you both deserve. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
