Rob Reiner’s Kids Jake and Romy Threw the First Pitches at a Dodgers Game to Honor Their Dad

Baseball was the thing Jake Reiner shared most with his dad, and in April he wrote that he’d trade every game they ever went to for one more hour to say goodbye.

Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28, threw ceremonial first pitches at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 2, closing out a three-game series between the Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox.

Jake, an actor and reporter who co-hosts the Dodgers podcast “The Incline,” threw straight down the middle to outfielder Alex Call. Romy, an actor and writer, sent hers high and wide, and infielder Miguel Rojas reached up to catch it. The siblings hugged next to the mound afterward.

Their father was a Dodgers season ticketholder for about 60 years, a fandom he’d inherited from his own father, Carl Reiner, and passed on to Jake. He told People in 2023 that he and Jake went to “at least 25 or 40 games a year.” Every summer, the two took “baseball trips” until they’d visited every Major League ballpark.

In an April Substack essay, Jake wrote that his bond with his dad “was first built on baseball,” and that he’d trade every Dodgers game, every Broadway show, and every vacation for one more hour to say goodbye.

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” he wrote. “It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.”

He also wrote: “I’ll never go to Dodger Stadium again without feeling my dad’s presence and hearing his voice tell me why Shohei Ohtani should never bat in the leadoff spot.”

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, a producer and executive at their company Castle Rock Entertainment, were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on the afternoon of Dec. 14. Romy Reiner found them. Police allege they were fatally stabbed.

Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, had been living in a guesthouse on the property and had struggled with addiction for years, according to a family friend cited by the Los Angeles Times. Michele had grown increasingly concerned about his mental health in the weeks before her death.

Nick has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail on two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances of multiple murders and use of a deadly weapon.
