Blink Twice by Zoe Kravitz is now streaming for free (as long as you have Amazon Prime).

Blink Twice was one of best psychological thrillers in recent memory. Its disturbing nature and stylized approach to topical subject matter had many people comparing it to the influential 2017 hit Get Out. There are good reasons for that comparison.

Blink Twice (2024)
Alia Shawcat and Naomi Ackie play best friends Jess and Frida.

The plot of Blink Twice involves two women, Frida and Jess, who decide on a whim to accompany billionaire Slater King on a trip to his private island. Once there, Frida and Jess have a good time. A strangely good time where the days seem to blend together. Then one morning, Jess is nowhere to be found. She’s gone, and only Frida remembers that she was ever even there. As Frida tries to figure out what is happening, she uncovers a thoroughly disturbing secret.

That’s the setup for the plot, but what the story of Blink Twice is really about involves power imbalances between genders and classes, abuse, cancel culture, and a host of related topics. The movie uses these highly-charged, socially relevant subjects as a way to create an intense psychological experience for the viewer. It’s here where you might start to see some similarities between Blink Twice and Get Out.

Jordan Peele’s Get Out is a masterful thriller that ratchets up the tension exponentially as it hurtles towards its finale. It’s an amazing film that deftly tackles subjects involving race, privilege, and the exploitation of Black people.

At the same time, it’s also a superb genre film made by someone who clearly loves movies like The Shining (1980), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), and even Halloween (1978), all of which Peele has mentioned as influences. In that way, Get Out is smart and deeply satisfying for genre fans.

Similarly, Blink Twice uses genre-film trappings as a conduit for intensely personal issues. Zoë Kravitz directed and co-wrote Blink Twice, drawing inspiration from the #MeToo movement that exploded into the public consciousness in 2017. All of her frustrations were poured into the script and formed into a psychological revenge thriller. Like Get Out, Blink Twice delivers visceral thrills that linger in your mind because they’re built on a foundation of true emotion.

So if you’ve missed Blink Twice, make a point to check it out as soon as you can. It’s currently available on physical media and digitally, and it will become available to watch as part of a Prime Video subscription.
