Do you ever feel like you’re behind, or sometimes (but rarely) ahead, of others in life? You’re on the wrong page, you’re not on the right chapter, the words are becoming all jumbled up. You aren’t where you originally expected yourself to be at this moment in time. You feel lost and unsure of this book called life.

You’re completely alone while your friends are moving in with their significant others. You don’t have the job you want while others are pursing their dream careers. You’re counting pennies while your friends are constantly shopping and living extravagantly. It seems like things don’t come as easily to you as they do to the people around you. You think you’re not advancing while everyone else is at full speed.

The problem is that this comes from comparing ourselves to others. We scroll on social media and see how great other people’s lives appear, then we feel badly about our own lives. Pictures of engagement rings remind us that we are lonely, pictures of nice things remind us that we are struggling financially, pictures of fun times remind us that our lives are boring. The reality is that we don’t really know the truth behind these pictures, but we can’t think logically while we’re down.

But it’s not just social media. Conversations with friends, with family members, with coworkers, etc. all make us think that maybe we aren’t doing so well. Sentences like, “ I just got a promotion!” and “We’re traveling to Europe for the summer!” make our stomachs turn because we worry that we aren’t living life correctly. That everyone else keeps turning the page and reading left to right, while we’re struggling to make out the words and have kept a bookmark in the same section for God knows how long.

But this is the real, honest truth.

Life is a book that can be read in any direction.

You can turn the pages forward or backward and at your own pace. You can reread pages over and over again however many times you need to or want. You can read the words left to right or right to left. You can take words from different pages and combine them any way that you like. You can erase sentences and rewrite new ones. Read the book of life any way that you want to, there is no right or wrong way. What’s important is that you try to make the best of it before your book closes. So keep reading and don’t stress about which page you’re on. There’s no such thing as the wrong page. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
