When I Went To Your Funeral

I heard ‘I'm sorry for your loss’

When I went to the cemetery
I kicked goose poop
Off your tombstone
And laughed
Because even though you were dead
Life was still shitting on you

And

When I went to the funeral
I played with a pebble
in my pocket
And when they spoke
I counted
Words like ‘gone’ and ‘too soon’

And

When I went to the wake
I hid in a closet
Wondering how long
You did the same thing
Looking at all of the clothes
You never got to wear

And

When I went to the house
after she found your body –

I heard ‘I’m sorry for your loss’
And wondered why
They were so sorry
If you weren’t –
You just finally got
Where you wanted to go. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
