Here’s something you may not have known: actor David Spade, who you may have seen on SNL or Grown Ups, is actually Kate Spade’s brother-in-law. What’s less surprising is that David has spent the past two days mourning the loss of his sister-in-law, who committed suicide just yesterday, commemorating her in the best way he knew how: by reminding the world that she was witty, intelligent, and a joy to be around.

He shared two photos of himself with Kate on social media — one from a book signing, and another from Christmas. While each had different captions, they both ended the same: “It’s a rough world out there people. Try to hang on.”

The posts are heartfelt and raw, and not only give a sense of who Kate truly was, but what she meant to the people around her. After all, she and David had been family for quite some time. His brother, Andy Spade, married Kate in 1994, meaning that the two had been related for about 24 years. It’s a pretty long time, when you think about it.

Of course, David is far from the only one mourning the loss of the fashion mogul. Even outside of her family, Kate influenced a world of celebrities, figureheads, and fashion enthusiasts. She will be dearly missed, and forever remembered fondly.
