In an interview with Vogue, Rihanna finally gave the world insight into that VMAs love profession, as well as where she stands with Drake now — and it’s probably not what fans want to hear.

Rihanna and Drake were all anyone could talk about after the 2016 VMAs when Drake professed his love for her publicly while presenting her the Vanguard award. The two began dating soon after, and let’s just say no one was particularly surprised. The rapper and songstress have had a long history together, and plenty of people guessed that they’d end up together at some point. It seemed to many to be just a matter of time.

Seriously, their chemistry was off the charts. Just look at them in Rihanna’s “Work” music video:

In some ways, Ri Ri and Drake were the OTP of hip hop. We watched them grow together, collaborate with each other, even profess their love for each other. Of course we were invested in their relationship — it was one of the few celebrity relationships we felt like we really had a window to see into.

But Rihanna and Drake have since broken up, just months after the two officially started dating. The former is now dating billionaire businessman Hassan Jameel and the latter went on to date J. Lo, and the rest of us have come to terms with the fact that even our favorite celebrity relationships must come to an end. Despite their separations, it seemed like things were still civil between the pair, but according to Rihanna, it’s hardly even that.

“We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either,” Rihanna told Vogue. “It is what it is.”

Rihanna also explained that while Drake’s VMAs love profession may have seemed cute to us, she wasn’t quite as charmed: “Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”

Rihanna had little more to say about the situation, and I don’t blame her. It has to be somewhat awkward having the whole world know about your relationship, and even more awkward having so many people ask about your ex. Sometimes it’s better to just leave things in the past. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
