If you haven’t heard of “NaNoWriMo” before, you’re probably wonder why it’s a trending topic on Twitter and other social media sites. More importantly, you’re probably wondering what the hell it is. No, it’s not a new species of insect — it’s a month-long writing challenge in November.

The name, which stands for “National Novel Writing Month,” refers to one of the most important periods of time in a writer’s life — that is, if they care to participate. This writing challenge is not for the weak-hearted. Basically, NaNoWriMo is all about finally writing that novel you’ve been talking about starting — but all in one month.

That’s right. An entire novel. Yeah, it’s hard. Really hard, actually.

No, of course I’m not panicking. Why do you ask???

NaNoWriMo happens every November, so if you’re interested in participating but don’t feel prepared enough to start now, you can always jump on the bandwagon next year. But also, don’t be afraid to say “what the hell” and give it a chance this year. What have you got to lose, honestly? It’s only November 1 — you still have 30 days to get your shit together and write the next American classic. Or, you know, even Harry Potter fanfiction, if you’d like. No judgment here.

You can sign up for the challenge here or also just do it on your own. I like participating and personally I’ve never signed up with an organization to do it. It’s up to you and your own personal style of motivation.

If you are participating in NaNoWriMo this year, don’t forget to take care of yourself! Drink some water, eat a snack, don’t forget to get enough sleep. You’re not going to crank out the next New York Times bestseller if you’re half asleep and starving. May the odds be ever in your favor. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
