The problem with having power is that it’s easy to abuse it. That’s been one big criticism toward the law enforcement these days, especially when it’s so hard to keep our police officers accountable. Luckily for us, some of them keep themselves in check.

When this police chief was caught speeding by a civilian, he didn’t ignore their complaint. In fact, he wrote himself a citation and publicly acknowledged the incident on the Sperry Police Department’s official Facebook page.

The message from Chief Burch read:

I am writing to inform everyone that I, Chief Burch, was breaking the law by speeding on 103rd St N. A citizen made a complaint about it and I acknowledge that I was wrong in traveling at 75 and 80 mph. I did have a reason for being in a hurry, but my speeds were not reasonable. I am holding myself accountable just as anyone else would have to be. I have written myself a citation and will be paying it just like every other citizen. I regret my actions and I sincerely apologize. I hope everyone has a great Easter weekend and please be safe.

A lot of people commended the officer for owning up to his mistakes and accepting the consequences for his actions.

Others, well, weren’t so kind.

Did he do the honorable thing or just the decent human being thing? I couldn’t tell you, but what I can tell you is this: the best comment by far comes from Imgur user Agent:

TBH I’d pay the ticket for him just to be able to see that. Let me know, Chief Burch. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
