An Open Letter To Anyone Who Has Ever Questioned Absolutely Everything

In this life, you were made to feel deeply, to express your sorrows, and to allow yourself to be authentic with yourself through life's many ups and downs.

I feel like we live in a society where everyone feels like they have to put on a facade to face the world. We put on a facade at work, at school, and on social media in front of our thousands of “friends” who think our lives are perfect.

We put up a facade when we meet up with friends and they ask us, “How are you doing?” and instead of telling them the honest truth about our lives and how we feel, we respond by saying, “Everything is great!”

But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Beneath our smiles and the outside image we present to others is a person who sometimes questions everything. We wrestle with thoughts of inadequacy and we constantly wonder if we are enough.

We wonder why we can’t stop comparing ourselves to others and why it seems as though our time hasn’t arrived yet. We wonder if we are successful enough and if our voice holds any validity; we wonder if we’ll be successful at all.

At times, we wrestle not with thoughts of external validation and accomplishments, but we question if we will ever heal on the inside.

We wonder if the depression that tried to take us will one day come back, or if just for a day we can escape from its firm grip on our lives. We wonder if others can see the damage that anxiety, bipolar disorder, or thoughts of suicide has done to us, and when we meet people for the first time, we try our hardest to conceal our scars so we don’t bleed onto them.

We’ve all had days where we question everything.

However, I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to question everything. You weren’t made to go through life numb to your feelings. You weren’t made to feel pain and disappointment and not question the effect that it has had on your entire being.

In this life, you were made to feel deeply, to express your sorrows, and to allow yourself to be authentic with yourself through life’s many ups and downs.

Some people might say that you are too sensitive, that you think too much, or that you should just let go, but as human beings, we aren’t wired to live and then just sweep our experiences under the rug. We are made to question, to ponder, to grieve, to put the pieces all together and then to heal.

If you are still beating yourself up for going back to your old ways, or you’re still questioning everything in life that has gone wrong, don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s okay to have days where you question it all. So here’s a letter to anyone who’s ever questioned absolutely everything. You will heal. You will make it. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
