It’s not easy to make changes in our lives. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the thought of developing positive habits and making steps towards changing for the better? A great way to develop new habits is in small steps over time. Here are some habits that can be developed in 30 minutes or less per day. Pick a few of them and put them into action. After a couple of weeks you’ll find yourself with new positive habits that will make you healthier, happier, and wiser.
1. Read books
In my opinion books are one of the best investments you can make. They don’t cost much and they can be full of great information. Tony Robbins credits reading 30 minutes per day as one of the main habits he formed that helped him become as successful as he is today. 30 minutes doesn’t seem like much, but it can add up to around 12 to 15 books per year. The more you knowledge you have to put to use the better.
2. Listen to audio books
You can listen to audio books on your way to work if you commute or you can listen to them while you work out. Audio books are great for people who don’t enjoy having to physically read books. Same great information; different medium.
3. Go for walks
Walks are an excellent way to gather your thoughts and gain some clarity on situations that are going on in your life. I’ve had several epiphanies and serendipitous moments while taking a stroll. Walking every day is also good for your health. It’s often recommended for people who are just beginning to start an exercise routine.
4. Meditate
People are on two sides of the fence when it comes to the effectiveness of meditation. My personal experience is that it works quite well. It’s great for lowering stress and clearing your mind from the anxious thoughts that accumulate over time.
5. Make simple, short to do lists
You should make a list of the most important things you need to get done that day. Keep your list small. Only include items that are going to have a major impact. Keeping regular to do lists and actually completing them builds self-confidence and makes you more productive.
6. Write down the things you’re grateful for
This may seem a bit cheesy, but it’s actually a fantastic way to gain perspective and learn to appreciate the good things in your life. Mornings are great for this exercise because it establishes a positive mood for the entire day. No matter who you are or what you’ve been through, I’m sure you can find something to be grateful for.
7. Think
Sit in a room by yourself in silence and think. Think about your goals. Think about situations that need to be resolved. Struggle through the process of being alone with your mind. Many times we don’t find solutions to problems because we haven’t taken enough time to think of a creative way to solve them. You’d be surprised what you come up with if you take the time to think and focus.
8. Do some form of exercise
You can go for a run, lift weights, do yoga, anything to get your heart rate up and build strength and endurance. 30 minutes is more than enough time to exercise if you put some effort into it.
9. Watch TED talks
TED talks are roughly 20 minutes long. They feature speakers who are experts on many different subjects. You can learn about new technologies, ways to build your confidence, strategies for business; the list goes on and on. TED talks often include innovative new ideas that are going to become mainstream in the future. They’re a great resource for people looking to learn about the latest trends.
10. Unplug before you go to bed
When it’s almost time to go to sleep you should turn off your television, close your computer, and put away your smart phone. You can do things like read or spend time talking with your significant other. Take some time to actually wind down and reflect on your day. Many experts say that looking at screens can keep you from falling asleep so unplugging before the night is a great way to relax and end the day.
