If you ladies are anything like I used to be, then you probably get intensely nervous before your first date with a new guy. You might become nearly obsessive about what to wear and what to say. In the past, I used to get really shy and high strung around guys I like the most. On dates, my voice would shake and I’d say silly things that my real self would never say. I once even rescheduled a date because I felt so anxious about it.

It took a while to build up my confidence but looking back now, there are a few important key ideas that I wish I would have known back then. If I had understood these things, I definitely wouldn’t have been so timid.

1. He’s probably more nervous than you are.

If you look closely enough, it will likely be evident even though guys do their best to hide it. There is more pressure on him than there is on the woman to be cool, confident, and attractive. Men generally have to work harder than women on that kind of thing, and they are afraid they might screw up and say or do something wrong. They are human too, and they just hope you think they are good enough for you.

2. He already likes you.

Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect because if he’s going out with you, then he already likes you. Most guys don’t go out on dates with women they don’t like. If he has agreed to a date, then he thinks you are attractive and cool enough for him to spend his time on.

3. Men are more into qualifying themselves to you.

It’s part of male nature to be the ones to prove themselves to females, so they are more likely going to be focused on doing that rather than judging you. They also admittedly love the thrill of the chase, so just remember that you are the prize. That doesn’t mean that you don’t have to put any effort into being a good date, but keep in mind that you are qualifying him before he is qualifying you.

4. Some things, you just can’t control.

As women preparing for a date, we can easily trick ourselves into thinking every little outcome depends on what we do, say, or even wear. You should definitely bring your best game with you on a date, but it’s also important to understand that some things that happen on your date are going to be out of your hands – like the weather, traffic, bad service, how your date behaves, etc. Sometimes shit just happens and you have to relax and take things as they come.
