11 Things Everyone Can Do To Live A Happier Life
By Amy Chilcott
1. Ditch the toxic people in your life ASAP
Ditch friends who make everything about themselves, don’t really listen to what you say, constantly judge you or try to make you feel inferior. The longer you keep people like this in your life, the unhappier you’ll be.
2. Start to appreciate the little things
It’s so easy to skip over the little things in life we should appreciate. If you focus too much on the big, amazing things in life, you’ll be less happy because those things don’t happen very often. You’re not going to win the lottery every day; you’re more likely to have someone hold a door open for you (when they don’t have to) or pass by some beautiful flowers in a garden.
3. Make a daily list of three things you’re grateful for
Writing down things you’re grateful for every day increased life satisfaction and optimism.
4. Stop relying on others for happiness
Relying on others for happiness; what will you do when those people let you down or aren’t around when you’re sad? Start finding happiness internally instead.
5. Stop relying on others all together
This isn’t to say that you can’t ever rely on anyone for anything, just that you can’t constantly rely on others. People will let you down. The only person you can rely on is yourself; you’re the only one who will never leave you.
6. Treat yourself every now and again
Put some of your paycheck aside so you can buy yourself something nice every two weeks or so. It could be a new dress, a book or even just a coffee from Starbucks that you usually can’t afford.
7. Go after what you really want
Don’t be scared of failing. Being scared of failure will hold you back and you’ll never get what you really want. If you fail, use it as a learning experience so you have a better chance at being successful the next time you try.
8. Let go of the past
Don’t dwell on the things you can’t change. Clinging to past problems only causes anger and despair. Move on and don’t look back.
9. Smile more
As strange as it sounds, smiling more will make you happier. Smiling has been proven to reduce stress, improve how you feel and increase likability.
10. Don’t talk negatively
Complain less and stop saying negative things. Negative talk leads to negative thoughts that lead to unhappiness.
11. Don’t be too optimistic or too pessimistic
Being overly optimistic will cause you to feel unhappy when things don’t work out the way you thought they would. Being too pessimistic is just depressing. Try to see things as they really are or, if you can’t do that, try to stop overthinking everything.
