Here’s Why We Have Such A Hard Time Letting Go

We hold on when we know we shouldn’t. We cling to the past. We cling to memories long gone. Smiles that have left. Reasons that don’t actually make sense.

There are lots of reasons we hold on when we should let go, one being that we fear change. We hold on to what we know. We hesitate to make a change because of the uncertainty. Sometimes we remain in unhappy situations just because we are scared. Unhappiness is sometimes easier than taking a leap of faith.

And for that reason, we hold on.

We hold on when we know we shouldn’t. We cling to the past. We cling to memories long gone. Smiles that have left. Reasons that don’t actually make sense.

Holding on might seem easy, but it’s not. It can eat at your soul. It can consume you. And make you vastly unhappy.

But sometimes holding on is easier than leaving what we know.

Easier than changing your life. Than letting go of everything you know. To start off fresh. A clean slate.

We hold on because we are comfortable. Even when we are unhappy, we think that maybe this is it. We hold on because we have pride. We don’t like to admit that we are wrong. We struggle to let go.

Sometimes we make ourselves miserable in doing this. We stay in unhappy situations, sometimes even toxic situations. We hold on, not because it is the easy way out, but because sometimes it is all we know.

And while deep down we know we deserve more, it is an everyday battle with oneself. Between what we feel and what we know. Between the heart and the brain.

We hold on to happy memories. Feelings. Nostalgia. We hold on with all we have until we’re hanging by a thread. We hold on as long we can.

But one day, maybe you won’t be able to hold on any longer. One day you will be at your wit’s end. You will know. The harder you hold on, the harder it hurts. But one day in the not-so-far future, you will let go. And you will be okay. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
