A Reminder That It Gets Better

If you are hurting, I promise you it gets better.

If you are hurting, I promise you it gets better. One day, you will see that the tears you cried alone on the bathroom were only used to water you to become the flower you were meant to be all along.

One day, you will realize that the pain you felt deep in your bones was only there because you allowed it to be and that you had the power all along. You will not, however, feel guilty about the fact that you couldn’t heal yourself. Rather, you will rejoice in the former pain, as you will now know that you could not have become the person you are without it.

I know that you are reading this in bed, with the covers pulled over your head, lying in the darkness. I know your makeup has smeared over your face from the indescribable pain you are, the pain that has peaked to the point where you no longer feel everything. I know it’s difficult to get out of bed and take a shower. I know it’s difficult to eat, now that everything in your life tastes, quite simply, like mashed potatoes.

One day you will be able to smile without force again, and the laughter will bubble out of you like a freshly poured glass of champagne, the kind that simply can’t be stopped.

One day you will be able to taste your favorite food again and have a conversation with your favorite people. You will no longer doubt whether you are loved, or whether you are nothing but a burden.

You will feel your heart soften and come alive again.

You will learn to love yourself, and you will be able to look in the mirror for longer than a few seconds. Enjoy your new found confidence to the next level, you’ve come a long way and you deserve this.

Do not be afraid should you feel a pinprick feeling that almost feels like you are reverting back to the depression that swallowed you whole. I promise it’s not coming back. Speak to someone close to you about it, but refuse to dwell on the feeling. Before long, you will notice that it disappears almost entirely.

For the time being, there where you are hurting, I want you to know that you are not alone in what you’re feeling. I know it feels like your cries are falling on deaf ears, and as if no one understands your pain. I promise you, it gets better. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
