A Poem For My Best Friend

It is only you that can be my person.

By

Words come to me with ease: they flow from my fingertips like the heavy downpour of raindrops and float off my tongue like dandelions in the wind. But on the rare occasion I find myself at a loss for words… there is one particular thing, or rather one particular person, that I cannot find suitable words to describe.

Friends have come and gone from my life like ships passing in the moonlight, but you have remained my constant. Although there was a time where it seemed as if an ocean of silence stood between us; we proved to be inseparable.

Like magnets, we found our way back to each other. Nothing could ever keep us apart.

You are the calm in my storm. Yes, many have said this to describe a person but you are the one source of peace in my dark and stormy mind. Your singing dries my tears and your hoodie soon became my shield. Your words lick my wounds clean and your presence is my gravity.

We talk of soulmates and finding the one person who will stand by you forever, but I know that I have already found him. And he is the smartest man I know; he has a heart of gold and a sense of humor to rival Trevor Noah’s… he is you. And I know that I will never love another human being as much as I love you.

I can only hope the man that  I one day, marry will be at least half the man that you are; but no one will ever be you for me.

It is only you that can be my person.

I pray to God every day that you will never leave me because deep down I know you do not need me and I do not need you. But hell, living without you in my life is a life I don’t want to live.

And sometimes being wanted is much more than being needed. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
