1. Jaws (1975)

There’s nothing like a gripping sea thriller about humans becoming shark chow to remind you that being single is not the worst thing in the world. It’ll evaporate even the worst existential dread from your mind. As an added bonus, it will make every shower you take in the days that follow hyper efficient, because lord knows you won’t be able to stand in a pool of water for long without shrieking. You’re welcome, planet Earth!

2. Bride of Chucky (1998)

Can we give it up for relationship goals? I mean, what’s more romantic than a beau that matches your bloodlust and appreciates your love for black lipstick? Okay, so maybe that isn’t the take away. This one is a gift for my recently single friends especially. A reminder that sometimes being single is better than being in a relationship that brings out the worst in you. And also that you dolls are creepy as hell. Was this explanation a bit of a reach? Sure. But so was the entire plot of this movie. Enjoy!

3. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

A millennial classic. A pair of well worn jeans and four friends navigating through the challenges of life as teenagers before they inevitably mature into jobless college graduates. Jokes aside, the movie is the perfect reminder that romantic love is great, but that it’s not the only love out there. The love shared between friends can be wildly underappreciated, and hopefully watching this movie will help remedy that.

4. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Romantics rejoice, this classic has made its way onto the list! Meg Ryan’s famous moans paired with Billy Crystal being, well, Billy Crystal, is good enough reason to watch this flick any day. But the story of a romance that slowly develops between friends unbeknownst to them is especially suited for today as a single person.

The point isn’t to frantically try to replicate the scenario with your own friends. Rather, it’s important to appreciate the fact that the romance developed just when it needed to, in a nonlinear way, while being subject to its own pitfalls. It’s a beautiful story and a beautiful reminder that love happens exactly when it should. Your being single now is only an indication that the story of your Ever After is still being written. Don’t try to rush it and enjoy the beauty of now.

5. Cowspiracy (2014)

I hear ya’, a documentary? What’s that about? This piece on the sustainability of animal agriculture is more than a superficial distraction from the cinnamon hearts and love notes this holiday welcomes.

Its thought provoking narrative reminds you that regardless of how beautiful or lack luster it may be, the world is not changed for your romantic life. However, there are causes that you can pour your love and passion into that will reap the benefits by inciting change. [tc-marl]
