I have known the depths of heartbreak like I have known my favorite song.

I played it over and over again until even I needed a break from it. I learned the harmonies, wrote an entire musical score based on it and tattooed the lyrics on every inch of my skin.

I let it consume me and seep into every aspect of my life.

I cried my tears of rejection at every inconvenient turn.

But you get to a point in the broken heart process where those things stop becoming relevant to you. There comes a moment where the immediate crippling pain subsides and transitions into a subtle aching in your chest. And you live with it. You have no choice.

Now you can let this lingering pain defeat you. You can spend all of your time, energy and self worth trying to win this person back.

But there’s another option; one we don’t talk about enough.

You can let this pain motivate you. You can be so much better because of it.

Travel, quit your job that brings you no happiness, get rid of the people and things that only drain you.

Find another means of dopamine through new hobbies and adventures. Do that thing you always said you were going to do but never got around to actually doing it.

Work harder than you ever have. Apply for positions you wouldn’t have applied for. Never be satisfied until you achieve greatness.

Let the wounds fuel you in every endeavor you strive for.

Be better. Rise above the cracks in your heart and turn them into roots of a powerful tree you will nurture and grow into.

Let the heartbreak ruin who you are. Let it tear you apart limb from limb. Then create something incredible from the rubble and ash. Create the person you always envied.

And when you start achieving your dreams, the aching will dissipate slowly.

Never directly attribute your success to the person who broke you down. Because that was your hard work, not theirs. But know that the rejection pushed you to be the immeasurable lengths you have reached.

So with your heartbreak, you have two choices: you can live as a shrewdly broken person and take it lying down. You can throw up your white flags and accept the mediocre for yourself.

Or you can stand up, shake the dust off, set the bar unbelievably high and swing from it.

This is the part of heartbreak that you need to know about. This is the motivation you need to love the person you can be.

See this as an opportunity not a loss.

Start over. Be better. Never look back.

Don’t squander it. This is your chance. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
