Here’s The Honest To God Problem You Perpetuate Each Time You Utter The Word ‘Slut’

People like to have sex. There is no reason one gender should gain the acceptance of having more sex than the other.

Slut. Whore. Hoe.

When hearing those words, what gender came to mind? I guarantee almost every single one of you will say female, if you are answering truthfully. Whichever word you choose, you’re describing a female in a negative light.

My question is, Why?

Being objective, I understand the assumptions people have. Females were seen as insubordinate to males for a very long time. Although we’ve come a long way, we haven’t come far enough. Gender inequality still happens today and has not completely disappeared by any means. Times have changed but change is still hard. Change will always be hard for people.

I can’t help but wonder if people actually took the time to think about what they said and why they were saying it, would that change what came out of their mouth? A girl has sex so we call her a slut. A girl doesn’t have sex with us we call her a prude. We are damned if we do and we are damned if we don’t. A guy has sex with a girl and we praise him or even say nothing. A guy doesn’t have sex with a girl we call him a gentleman. This outdated, single-minded, male dominant, hypocritical way of thinking is fucked and complete bullshit. We need to stop singling out an entire gender because of past ways of thinking. Here are the three biggest problems with using the world slut as a way to describe females in a negative way.

1. It’s associated with woman 99.9 % of the time.

What is a slut? According to urban dictionary it is “a woman with the morals of a man.” We use this word to define a woman in a negative light while relating to men in a positive and humorous light. Is it just me or does that make no fucking sense?

Another top definition of slut according to urban dictionary is “A woman who sleeps with many men.” This baffles me beyond belief. A woman who sleeps with many men? Okay so what about the man who sleeps with many women? Oh that’s right, we call him a manwhore. We put the word man in front of whore because whore belongs to women. We don’t create a new word because there is no negative connotation with this description for the male population.

2. You are being judgmental.

What right do you have to judge someone else just because their actions or thoughts do not align with your beliefs. There are people in relationships and there are people that aren’t in relationships. Just because someone isn’t in a relationship doesn’t mean that person shouldn’t still take part in having sex. They have the right to have sex just as much as the person in a relationship. Spoiler alert: They may just have sex with multiple people, and they get to make that choice for themselves. It doesn’t matter if they have a vagina or a penis. They both have an equal right. If you choose to be judgmental, that is your prerogative.

But if you choose to be judgmental, go ahead and judge both genders. Don’t be single-minded.

3. The more we use it the more it will continue.

“But you all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it ok for guys to call you sluts and whores.” – Ms. Nobury in Mean Girls

There are a number of words we throw around so nonchalantly without a second thought. At a young age I used slut so regularly because my underdeveloped brain was on listen and repeat. We have rappers that refer to women as “bitches and hoes” every 4-5 seconds throughout rap songs. They are “the man” and the women are “the hoes and bitches.” Women get the negative adjectives and the men get the positive adjective. Yet we continue to listen to the music making it all okay. Let’s stop judging solely one gender on acts that both genders take part in. Let’s think before we speak. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
