You Deserve More Love Than That Lost Boy Can Give You

You should be his little slice of paradise, not his punching bag.

Say goodbye to bad boys, fuck boys, and mama’s boys. There are real men out there, just waiting for you to enhance their lives. So don’t sell yourself short. You deserve more love than those lost boys can give you.

He has no right to take his problems out on you.

His life might be a living nightmare. He might’ve dealt with some shit that you couldn’t even imagine. But that’s no excuse to treat you poorly. If he blames you for problems that you have absolutely nothing to do with, then it’s your duty to walk away. You should be his little slice of paradise, not his punching bag.

You shouldn’t feel guilty about being happy.

You don’t want to date someone who’s so miserable that they make you feel like shit whenever something good happens to you. Your boyfriend is supposed to be the first person you run to when you have good news. If you’re worried about telling him about the amazing day he had, because it’ll make him feel extra shitty about his own life, then you’re dating the wrong person.

He’s not a charity case.

Don’t stay with him because you pity him or because you think he can change over time. The only reason you should date him is because you genuinly care about him. If the love’s not there, then you shouldn’t be, either. You deserve someone who can give you what you need and he deserves someone who accepts him as he is.

You should be able to talk openly to him.

You shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells when you speak to him to avoid setting him off. His temper might not seem like a big deal right now, but it could get out of hand in the future. It could get dangerous. It’s better for you to break his heart now than for him to break your ribs somewhere down the line.

You deserve a real relationship.

It doesn’t matter if we live in the century that revolves around casual hookups. If you want a real relationship, then you shouldn’t settle for a half-assed one. FWBs and open relationships won’t cut it. If he’s too terrified of commitment to call you his girlfriend, then you don’t need to call him at all. Delete his name from your contacts and find a man who actually respects you enough to agree to monogamy.

Your boyfriend isn’t your boss.

You’re in charge of your body. That means you can wear whatever makeup and clothing you want to wear. If he tries to dictate the way you look, then feel free to tell him to go to hell. He’s not your father or your fashion stylist. He doesn’t have a right to tell you what you can and cannot do.

He needs to put himself first for now.

He can’t save you and you can’t save him. If he has issues that you can’t even begin to help him with, then he shouldn’t be in a relationship. It’s not because he’s unlovable or unattractive. It’s because he can’t make you his main priority. He needs to put himself first, for the sake of his sanity. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay friends. You can keep him in your life, but keep your heart out of his reach. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
