Out of all the conversations we have with people and the questions we ask them, the most important conversations we should have are with ourselves, and the most important questions are the ones we ask ourselves when we reflect on our lives, our past, our future and where we really want to be in life.

1. What should I really be doing for a living?

Are you chasing your dreams? Are you trying to find your calling? Are you living a passionate and purposeful life? Or are you settling? Are you working at a mediocre job that you don’t see yourself growing in? Are you actively trying to make your dreams come true? Are you listening to the people around you who keep pushing you to live a safe yet passionless life?

Realize how important it is to do work you enjoy and love because it will truly be the most rewarding gift you can ever give yourself. Everyone deserves to be happy at their jobs and feel like their lives have meaning. A lot of people wait around and then realize they could’ve been living their dream if only they invested more time and thought into it.

Invest that time now so you can be living a good life later, even if these questions confuse you, challenge you and provoke you, they’re worth it and remember just because you studied something or your parents told you that you should be doing something, doesn’t mean this is what’s right for you.

2. Am I in the right place with the right people?

Are you in the right city or even country? Or do you need to move away and start over? Are you surrounding yourself with people who love you and believe in you or are you surrounded by those who do not support you or understand who you really are? Do you have the right friends that are pushing you to live a better life? Or are you surrounded by friends who are more interested in superficial things and do not add any value to your life?

The people we spend most of our time with actually play a much bigger role than we think, they subconsciously impact our decisions, shape our thoughts and affect our actions. Spending time with the right group of people can truly improve the quality of our lives and make us happier.

3. What am I leaving for the world?

It doesn’t have to be millions of dollars but what are you trying to tell the world? What do you want to be known for? What is your message to the world? How do you want to be remembered?

Are you leaving people with good memories? Are you trying to help others? Are you trying to be more of a giver than a taker? Are you using your talents to serve others? Are you trying to make others happy? Are you leaving people with love and kindness?

It’s important to live a good life but it’s also important to give people something good to remember you by. Your legacy is just as important as your life.

4. Am I being kind to myself?

Have you forgiven yourself for your past mistakes? Have you learned that failure is just another stepping stone to success? Have you forgiven those who did you wrong and freed yourself from their pain? Have you moved on from the person who is no longer in your life?

You have to forgive yourself and let go of anything that brings you down. Everything in life is a learning experience and the more lessons we can learn, the wiser and stronger we become. Every mistake has a story and every story makes your book even better.

But the most important lesson you need to learn is to love yourself and be kind to yourself like you are with the ones you love because you will be stuck with yourself forever and being hard on yourself will only make the journey harder.

5. Where am I heading?

Where do you go from here? What’s next? What’s missing in your life? And how do you get to where you want to be?

If you are not happy; your next step should be to find the tools that will make you happy or at least lead you in the right direction.

If you are happy; your next step should be how to make others happy and how to inspire others to find their own happiness too.

You don’t have to plan every day for the next 5 years but you at least need to have a vision – a vision that keeps you going when things are not so great, a vision that makes you want to wake up every morning and get things done, a vision that makes you believe that there is so much more to life when you feel like there is nothing left to hold on to.  Thought Catalog Logo Mark
