When I got to the hotel he had already been there and filled the room with candles. Some spelled out “I love you” and others spelled out my name. We ordered food, drank, and stayed up all night.

1. “A few weeks into my freshman year of college, my boyfriend (who was attending school a few hours away) was texting me. I asked what he was doing and he responded, ‘knock knock.’ I was confused, but 5 seconds later there was a knock at my door. He had surprised me and when I opened the door he gave me a huge hug and kiss.”

2. “My high school boyfriend had a really great voice. For one of the big jazz shows our school put on, he had a solo piece. The night of the show, I was there supporting him and in the middle of his performance of ‘Come Fly With Me’ by Frank Sinatra, he walked off stage, found me in the audience, and sang to me. The spotlight circled us and time froze as everyone watched him serenade me. It was the most embarrassing yet sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for me. Afterwards he said, ‘I’ll always love showing you off.’ Every time I hear that song, I’m transported back to that moment and can’t help but smile.”

3. “Freshman year of college, my boyfriend and I were doing long distance. I was 10 hours from home and having a hard time transitioning to being so far away. On a long weekend, he drove up and completely surprised me. The feeling I got when I opened my dorm door and saw him standing there was unparalleled to anything. I felt so relieved and I cried instantly. It was the best surprise ever.”

4. “Junior year of college, I studied abroad in New Zealand. My current girlfriend was back in the states and it was a rough few months because we couldn’t see each other and talking wasn’t the easiest because of the time difference. When I flew back my parents were going to pick me up from the airport and bring me home and I had plans to go see her the next day. When I landed in the US and got off the plane I was looking for my parents but instead found my girlfriend outside baggage claim waiting for me with a sign and everything. I definitely teared up. I’ll never forget that.”

5. “I got sick with the stomach bug the day of my junior prom. As you can imagine I was heartbroken. I had just started talking to my date and was so excited to go with him but obviously cancelled. After the prom he ditched the after party and came to my house to lounge on the couch and watch movies with me, even though I looked disgusting and had to leave the room every hour to relieve my sickness. Then the next week he took me on our own ‘prom’. He picked me up and told me to wear my dress. We had dinner on the beach just the two of us and danced to the songs they played at prom. It wasn’t prom, but it was one of the most perfect nights ever. We dated for two years after that.”

6. “It was my 20th birthday and we went out to dinner at this nice restaurant on the water. After dinner we went back to his house to lie down, and he asked me if I wanted dessert. He told me to go downstairs in the fridge and when I did I found a tray with 3 cupcakes from Crumbs. In the fourth spot where the fourth cupcake was supposed to be there was a box from Tiffany’s.”
– Valeria, 23
7. “Junior year of college, I was living with my girlfriend. On my birthday I came back from class and the whole apartment was decorated with balloons and streamers and embarrassing pictures of me. She made my favorite dinner, a cake, and got me the new FIFA game. We stayed up all night drinking and gaming even though she was absolutely horrible and hates video games. Damn, I shouldn’t have let that one go.”
– Jack, 25
8. “One time my boyfriend and I decided to meet half way from our respected schools for a weekend visit. We booked a hotel room and left accordingly so that we would arrive at the same time. But when I got to the hotel he had already been there and filled the room with candles. Some spelled out ‘I love you’ and others spelled out my name. We ordered food, drank, and stayed up all night.”
– Riley, 22
9. “My senior year of high school my girlfriend was a year older than me and her college was 8 hours away. For my 18th birthday she threw me a huge surprise party at my house and flew home for it. She charged everyone $5 for beer so after the party she gave me the money to buy a present with. I still can’t believe she pulled it off without me knowing.”
– Noah, 22
10. “In my early 20s I went to Paris for a summer in between college. I met this wonderful man whom I fell in love with. When we parted, he asked if I would write to him. We wrote each other for two years. In the last letter he sent to me he told me that he loved me so much that he was coming to America to be with me. We’ve been married 63 years now and I still have every letter he ever sent.”
