Eugene “Sherlock” Holmes is running for mayor of Kings Mountain, a city of 10,000 just half an hour south of Charlotte, North Carolina. His platform consists of one major policy point: arrest all “the gays.”

“If you elect me I [will] get the D.A. to swear out a warrant on any man who says he’s gay. Sodomy is a crime, a felony in the state of North Carolina!” — Eugene Holmes, candidate for Mayor

Holmes insists that sodomy is still against the law in North Carolina, though the law outlawing sex between same-gender partners was voided by a Supreme Court decision in 2003 that deemed all anti-sodomy laws unconstitutional.

As Holmes contemplates throwing homosexuals in jail, he admits that he has also personally spent some time behind bars, having spent over four years in the slammer after being found guilty of larceny in 1985. In addition, within the last few months he has been charged with disorderly conduct due to his behavior at a local plea market, and was recently ordered to serve 60 days of psychiatric treatment after after “unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.”

“You would probably classify me as someone needing help. I’m not a rocket scientist. But I do believe in holiness, in the Bible.” — Eugene Holmes, candidate for Mayor

In addition to his proposed round-up and incarceration of homosexuals and queers, Holmes also believes that the city — and the United States — needs to prohibit alcohol, outlaw divorce, and ban all immigration into the nation.

Holmes isn’t sure about his chances, saying that he is a “newcomer” who doesn’t “give a hoot about politicians.” Holmes is joining three other candidates, including the incumbent Mayor Rick Murphrey, on the ballot this November. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
