“Unbuilt” is a song that contemplates the collapse of manmade metaphors we use to understand love when love itself collapses. Originally written to be acoustic, musician Phyllis Heitjan hit a wall and handed it off to a longtime friend but first-time collaborator, Bob Szantyr (Oscillator/Modulator), essentially saying, “Can you build me a storm?” He did that, and built a sonic context for the storm to take place in. In the process of working on what he came back with, the dramatic end of the vocal track came together. The video, also produced by O/M, follows directly from the song’s narrative, showing a kind of dream state where the song’s major ideas are superimposed over Phyllis singing it.
