Luna Lovegood (played by Evanna Lynch) was first introduced to us in the series’ 5th book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Born to and the only child of Xenophilius Lovegood and Pandora Lovegood, she’s sorted to the House of Ravenclaw at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She attended Hogwarts from 1992 to 1998, was part of the Dumbledore’s Army (D.A.) and was eventually married to Rolf Scamander, a fellow naturalist, with whom she share twin sons named Lorcan and Lysander. Through the last 3 books of the series, she’s been one of my favorite characters. Maybe because I identify with her in so many ways and maybe because she confirms most of the things that I believe in. So without further ado, let me tell you five irrefutable reasons why Luna Lovegood is the BFF we all wish to spend the rest of our lives with.

1. She’s odd – and proud of it. Her oddness caused her to be teased by some other students at Hogwarts and her eccentricity earned her the name “Loony Lovegood”. She once read a magazine upside down and she stuck her wand in her ear for safekeeping. If you struggle to look “normal,” do not — you are a unique and beautiful individual. You may be labeled “weird” by people around you but as Luna proves, who cares? If you feel sad when you find you have committed several fashion faux pas when browsing through a magazine, do not be embarrased. With Luna, you are in great company — her choice of necklace is one made of Butterbeer caps and she once wore a bird-shaped earrings.

2. She’s a courageous soul. Luna is one tough woman. When Harry declared Voldemort‘s return, Luna was one of the few people who believed him with no skepticism, and proceeded to join the defense group Dumbledore’s Army. While they were at the Department of Mysteries, Luna fought several Death Eaters and protected Ron and Ginny in the process. So, if you ever need someone to be with you as you face the Voldemort’s in your life, take heart. Luna is the best person to fight with you, no matter how hard the battle is.

3. She’s supportive and loyal. When Luna was 9 years old, she witnessed her mother’s death during a magical experiment — and she’s seen Thestrals since. Harry first thought that he was imagining things when he began seeing winged horses, and he told no one about it. When he and Luna became friends, she confirmed to Harry that Thestrals exist, and that they can only be seen by people who’ve seen death and fully accepted the concept (in Harry’s case, when he witnessed Cedric Diggory‘s death). In the 5th book, I’m sure we all cried our hearts out when animagus Sirius Black a.k.a Padfoot passed away. Luna was there for Harry to comfort him as he deal with another loss. So — if you think you are “seeing” things, or if you’re simply going through a tough time, you can count on Luna to not doubt your sanity and to comfort and support you all the way.

4. She’s honest and has an open mind. She’s not the one to judge. She speaks her mind, yes, but not in a mean way. She does not shut you out just because your point of view is not based on logic. When you’re with Luna, you do not have to pretend you are somebody else. You can just be your awesome, weird self.

5. She’s a believer and is always hopeful. Luna believes in NarglesCrumple-Horned SnorkacksBlibbering Humdingers and many other “impossible” things. She’ll often get questioned (and even ridiculed) for her beleifs, but she’s not the one to back down about them. When her things were lost, I found it admirable how she remained calm and believed that they’d find their way back to her again. With that said, if you need inspiration and a little push as you embark on a journey  that many people around you may disapprove of, Luna is the perfect emotional companion. If you’ve lost important things and/or people, there’s no other person who can understand you better than Luna. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
