5 Things Your Token Funny Friend Wants You To Know
1. I spend some nights crying over proposal videos on YouTube.
My apologies if you’ve already checked me off as the biggest loser ever. But it’s true. There are times when I binge-watch proposal videos on YouTube and cry my eyes out because it makes me happy. (And sometimes sad because it just goes to show how severely single I have become.) But to that point, I have other emotions too. I am other things other than a comic. And at times, because I’m not cracking jokes, it does not mean that I’m sad. Sometimes, I just can’t always be the life of the party. And that’s okay.
2. I actually meant to be a bitch but it just came out funny.
Sassy Gay Friend? Yeah, that’s me. Being at a fashion school, I have become a magical unicorn full of insults and quick one-liners. Sometimes, being as light-hearted as a bitch can be, I can be insulting to basics that need to be called out. Think Bianca Del Rio and her Rolodex of Hate. But then, it comes off as a joke. It comes off as funny. Therefore, people don’t take it seriously. And then that idea rolls over into other aspects of life like minutes before AT&T took over Cingular. Then before you know it, you can’t be mean. You can’t be serious. You’re always just funny.
3. I’m just as insecure as you are.
Being the non-certified comedian that I am, my jokes and sneers can be dealt at the expense of others. A.K.A. I’m a bully. But we’ve all heard it. Bullies are the ones that have the most insecurities about themselves. Do you really think I bust people’s balls because I’m just a boss ass bitch? No. With us Funny Friends, I am most certain that we don’t do it in spite of someone… because then you wouldn’t really be a friend at all. But instead, it’s out of our sheer subconscious mind. We believe that it’s better to make a joke out of it to keep the conversation light. We don’t mean to do it on purpose, but it just comes out… like word vomit.
4. Sometimes, I need you to see that there could be something wrong.
All I have to say about this is a quote that came up due to the recent events of Robin Williams’ passing. Whether it was meant for comedy or something else, there’s some deeper meaning to be observed:
Heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.
Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.”
Man bursts into tears.
Says, “But doctor… I am Pagliacci.”
5. The greatest part of being funny is knowing I made you happy.
From what I know so far, laughter means happiness. Life is so complex and unpredictable. There are so many things that contribute to our daily stresses that sometimes we forget to smile. We forget to laugh. For me, even when I’m stuck in my own insecurities and my own dilemmas, nothing brings me more joy than to see a friend and make them laugh. If my wise-ass, insecurity-charged joke is what’s going to make your day even just a little bit better, then so be it.
