Up until recently, most mobile games leave a lot to be desired. Every once in a while a legit game for the iPad will be released like Bastion or Sword & Sworcery. I use the term legit game to describe the type of game you would find yourself playing on a console or PC if given the chance.

The majority of mobile games that are released many people would not play on a PC or console if given the chance. Most mobile games that I have played are often too simple or just general time wasters in between commuting or using the bathroom. Games like Bastion and Sword & Sworcery (both worth checking out) are few and far between. However the past 30 days have been incredible for iPad and iPad mini owners. Two legit, fun to play games have been released and you need to play them now!

1. FTL (Faster Than Light)

FTL was originally released in 2012 for PC, Mac, and Linux. It’s an indie, top down, simulation, rogue-like, rts-eqsue game. And that description does not even do it justice. FTL Advanced Edition (like FTL + a free DLC) is now out for iOS. Having played the PC version prior to the iOS release, I really enjoyed the game, but unsure of how it would port to the iPad mini.

After playing it for 90 minutes on a flight from Detroit to Boston, it felt like FTL was almost better suited for iOS! It is almost flawless in replicating the exact same gaming experience as you would have on the PC. The game is extremely difficult, but that’s what makes it fun to play. If you spend a lot of time commuting and are looking for a great game to both challenge you and make time fly by, FTL is worth buying for $9.99 in the App Store.

2. Hearthstone

In a previous article here on Thought Catalog I talked about how fun Blizzard’s (the company behind World of Warcraft) new free card game called Hearthstone was to play on the computer. It is a free to play game that does not bog you down with micro-transactions and allows you to play the game without ever spending a dime.

Hearthstone is available for you to download for free from the App Store giving you another legit game to play on your iPad. The game translates well from the PC/Mac to iOS and is available right now to play! The only thing worth noting in Hearthstone is that if you want to play you have to be connected to the Internet. Just be careful because the game is extremely addicting!

Between FTL and Heartstone, now is a great time to be an iPad or an iPad mini owner. I call FTL and Hearthstone “legit games” not to take anything away from the current mobile game titles, but to let you know that if you download either of these games, prepare for real gaming experience that happens to be mobile. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
