If there were a Best Grandfather of All-Time award, this guy would totally win. After learning that his daughter, Christine, kicked out her son for being gay, her father decided to have a heart-to-heart with her, offering some fatherly advice. Although we only have the details that are available though the FCKH8 campaign, we know that his grandson came out to his mother, who didn’t approve of his sexuality, allegedly calling him an “abomination” and telling him to find somewhere else to live. He did — with his grandparents, who offered the love and support he lacked at home.

For many queer children all over the world, these issues are a stark reality, as many are forced out of their homes for their sexuality, and not all of them are as incredibly lucky as Chad is to have such a kick-ass grandpa. Writing he’s “disappointed” in his daughter, he schools her on what it means to be a parent. He tells Christine, “You’re correct that we have a ‘shame’ in this family, but you’re mistaken about what that is…He was born this way and didn’t choose it more than he being left-handed. You, however, have made a choice of being hateful, narrow-minded and backward.”

However, it gets even better — because he didn’t stop there. He then says he no longer wants anything to do with her, dishing out the same treatment she gave to her own son. “So while we are in the business of disowning children,” he writes, “I think I’ll take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous…grandson to raise, and I don’t have time for a heartless b-word of a daughter. If you find your heart, give us a call.”

This note has appeared in the wake of other inspiring letters going viral, in which parents and grandparents voice support for their gaybies, as generations of young people increasingly come out earlier. You can read the entire letter below, a message of hope when some of us truly need to hear it. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
