50 Things We’ll Be Nostalgic About From The 2000s

Hey Ya, Mean Girls, Livejournal.

When I was in high school, 80s fashions and 80s parties were a cool thing. In recent years, it’s been all about the 90s. But that hard-to-label decade from the turn of the millennium, at the height of teen pop/boy band mania, to 10 years later, when TRL was off the air and the hipster craze had come and, depending on who you talk to, went, and we had a black president, were some interesting cultural times. What will we remember from that time period? I checked out this Reddit thread to see what people are reminiscing about from that age of internet, *NSync, and flip phones.

For me, it was the whole lifestyle. Ah, this takes me back to my high school days, must have been 2001-2. What a great time to be a nerd. Me and a couple of my school buddies were just 16…chilling out in one of our parent’s houses. Playstation 2 and the old N64 both ready to go. Couple of alchopop drinks in a bucket by the door (bacardi breezers or WKDs or some other horrific garbage. Beer tasted bitter!!). One of my mates would have brought a couple of extra PS2 controllers. Another brought some doritos. My dad had a 12kg “state of the art” projector he used for work presentations. I used to love the ritual of setting it all up. We would rig up the PS2 to the projector and even plug the audio into a hi-fi system. The final result would have been a screen size of, say, 34 inches…so gigantic back then. We play a few rounds of Red Faction, SSX, Burnou and even Goldeneye if there was enough demand (even by then it was a pretty old game). Some nights we would drive over to Blockbusters and pick up a DVD. I remember the excitement of driving through the city on a bright evening with my best friends in the world, discussing what films we should rent, anticipating an evening of gaming and films until late/early. Later on I remember we started ordering our DVDs from a company which combined DVDs/Games rentals and Pizza delivery in a single order – guaranteed in 30 mins or it was free! It was as if they had been design specifically for us. (Sadly that company didn’t last long!). I remember the long walks home afterwards…still full of energy, standing around on streets until 3AM talking about what it meant to be human, whether we were alone in the universe… No girlfriends/boyfriends/fiancées/wives/husbands/pets/kids/grandparents to look after, no jobs, no responsibilities, no expectations on us…just a whole weekend of fun laid out before us; a crisp white canvas of possibilities. Ah, those were the days. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
