New from Red Stripe UK — The Makers of Carnival, an initiative in collaboration with Noisey to feature the true creators behind Europe’s biggest annual cultural gathering — The Notting Hill Carnival. Shot by legendary photographer Pennie Smith, the features will include incredible portraits of not only the tastemakers who bring the event to life but also the individuals who make the gathering possible. Pictured below is Mick Johnson, who’s been a police commander since 1980, having witnessed an amazing and intense 32 years of sights, sounds, and drums. This is his last year on the Carnival beat. Rosaria Garcia, pictured below, has been dancing and choreographing at the Carnival since 2000. Norman Jay Mbe is a DJ who’s on his 31st Carnival. He created the “Good Times” sound system, which during the event attracts over 15,000 revelers a day.
These are just a few of the incredible people profiled by Pennie Smith in collaboration with The Makers of Carnival. Check out Red Stripe’s Tumblr to find out more!
