Phoebe Gates Knew Her Shopping App Was Taking Credit for Sales It Never Drove, Seven Months Before the Company Said It Found Out

Phoebe Gates was aware that her shopping app, Phia, was claiming commissions on sales it never helped make — and internal messages suggest she knew about it seven months before the company said it discovered the problem.

According to the messages, the app was designed to claim commissions on sales it never helped drive, and Gates was pushing to make sure it did.

“worried this is an issue across the board,” she wrote in December, telling developers to confirm Phia was taking credit for every sale even when shoppers ignored its coupons.
