John Mellencamp has turned a concert staple into a moment of protest, pausing one of his best-known songs to make a pointed remark about the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.

He was mid-verse in “Pink Houses” when he stopped cold: “They changed the name of it, but I’m not buying it.” The crowd roared in response.

At 74, Mellencamp has been working the line into the song at stops all summer.
