Bernie Sanders Burned an Estimated 90 to 180 Metric Tons of CO2 Flying Private to His Climate Rallies, Matching the Yearly Footprint of Up to 20 Americans

Bernie Sanders drew crowds to his climate rallies with a message about sacrifice — but the way he traveled to them tells a more complicated story.

By one estimate, Sanders burned between 90 and 180 metric tons of CO2 flying private to those events, a figure that matches the yearly carbon footprint of up to 20 Americans.

His campaign spent more than $560,000 chartering private jets for 11 trips, all while he warned crowds that climate change demands sacrifice.

Asked about it, he said flying commercial isn’t an option when 30,000 people are waiting.
