Ocasio-Cortez made the case on “It’s Open with Ilana Glazer,” arguing that any fortune at that scale comes from market power, broken rules, and underpaid workers rather than entrepreneurship. “There’s a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned,” she said.
The timing isn’t accidental. Democrats are pushing both millionaire and billionaire taxes ahead of the midterms, and the rhetoric is sharpening. California is weighing a billionaires’ tax that goes on the ballot in November.
Critics argue the math works against the people making it. States chasing those taxes have watched high earners pack up for Texas and Florida, where there’s no state income tax. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna have responded by pushing a national version, the idea being that there’s nowhere left to run.
Whether the framing holds, the political fight over who deserves their money is heading straight into the 2026 elections.
