Tom Holland Says He’s Recognized More for His ‘Umbrella’ Dance on Lip Sync Battle Than Spiderman
Back in 2017, Tom Holland and Zendaya went on Lip Sync Battle to promote their movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming. At this point, people who weren’t familiar with Tom and just thought of him as the new Spiderman didn’t know that he is a real dancer. Tom was actually discovered in dance class and asked to audition for Billy Elliot: The Musical. He got a role in the production and that’s how his career started.
On Lip Sync Battle, Zendaya had already performed to “24k Magic” by Bruno Mars. The audience thought she did a great job and would probably win the battle. Then Tom came out.
Most men who had performed on Lip Sync Battle (John Krasinski, Chris Pratt, LL Cool J, Stephen Merchant, etc.) played it for laughs. A few, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Channing Tatum, and Derek Hough gave more sincere performances. But Tom Holland is considered the best to ever do it.
Tom came out in a suit, doing a cutesy performance Gene Kelly-style to “Singin’ in the Rain” with an umbrella. Then the lights dropped, the rain machine kicked in, and he ripped off the suit to reveal fishnets, a leather leotard, red lipstick, and a short black wig. The needle dropped to Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ and Tom was grinding on the umbrella, doing a one-armed handstand, and absolutely serving the choreography.
Basically, Tom showed that he is the total package of a performer. The audience lost their minds. He wowed Zendaya and won the show. Now he and Zendaya are (allegedly) married.
Amy Poehler brought up his performance when he was a guest on her podcast, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, on Tuesday. Tom said he is more recognized for his “Umbrella” dance than “any piece of work I have ever done.” Amy agreed with his assessment, saying she’s watched the video “more than most movies.”
Do you think this is really Tom Holland’s greatest performance?
