We are programmed to believe that events are either positive or negative, good or bad, black or white. We assume that for things to be considered good, they must only relate to joy, happiness, abundance, prosperity, or comfort, and that anything opposite comes from a darker place. This verse, however, highlights a deeper truth about our Lord—in His eyes, ‘all things’ encompass both positive and negative experiences, because through His works, there is continuous divine activity behind the scenes connecting us to a deeper, grander purpose.

Every experience we face—whether challenging or hopeful—provides some spiritual benefit. This promise is simple—not all things are good, but God works them for good. Regardless of the pain and suffering that exists in this world, some caused by greater forces and some inflicted on one another, intentionally or not, we must not merely seek to understand why God allows these things to happen, but what good God can bring from them.
