Anne Hathaway celebrated her 43rd birthday this past November. Featured on the cover of the 2026 World’s Most Beautiful issue for People, she sat down with editor-in-chief Charlotte Triggs, who prefaced her inquiry by stating, “As a fellow 43-year-old.”

Because the dialogue involves two women of the same age discussing the concept of getting older, Hathaway’s responses avoid the typical celebrity clichés.

She previously struggled to grasp the meaning of the idiom “take it with a grain of salt.” For her, there was no moderation; every success felt like the ceiling and every failure felt like the floor. She describes letting go of that intensity in her 40s—specifically the drama of experiencing every emotion at maximum capacity.

In its place is a form of patience that only comes after living long enough to witness the long-term results of decisions made during your 20s and 30s.

The comparison that stood out in the reel was simple: you have the choice to either fear growing old or fear dying young. She chose the path that allows her to continue moving forward.

“I’ve never been this age. So let’s just figure it out.”
