This Is For The Girls Who Are Always ‘Too Much’
You do not have to apologize for being who you are—there is a reason behind it all.
Do you remember when you were a little girl? What did you want to be when you grow up? Did you want to be a princess, a mom like your own, or did you want to save the world?
None of the above is fine too.
The truth is, no matter what you wanted to be, you experienced critics and judgment along the way. Others might have said you were too much, so here is a reminder for all the girls who are always too much.
As a little girl, I was told I wore too much blue and I played with dolls too much. They seemed like innocent comments, but they were just the beginning of a lifetime of ‘too much’ to follow.
As a young girl, I studied a lot and did not have much of a life outside of school. People said I did too much studying, and as a child, I needed to play more.
Someone will always feel the need to have an opinion about you.
As a teenager, I started hanging out at the mall with my friends on weekends and life expanded for me a bit more. I was still in school, but my relatives said I went out too much.
In high school, I grew up more and life got confusing. I coped like many young girls do and made friends with food, perhaps more than I should have. Instead of giving me support, everyone said I ate too much.
People always feel the need to tell you what they think about you.
In college, I explored different lifestyles and started to seclude myself from my culture and went back and forth between being a loner and a social butterfly. The future can be so scary, and I was told I wanted to be independent too much. They also said I needed to stop wearing too much makeup.
In graduate school, I started taking life more seriously and I was disappointed that my life was not where I wanted it to be. I came home to be with my family and then there were people saying, “Look at her, she probably had too much fun in college.”
There is never any scarcity of opinions that we never ask for.
As a professional, I worked hard and enjoyed my life the way it was. Society started to wonder why I was not settled down and happily married with children—they assumed maybe I was just too much for anyone to handle.
As girls, we live our lives based on opinions. We live in fear of what others will think. We stay so guarded about what lies and rumors might be told.
I have been worried most of my life, not about what it was, but about what stories someone might make up over a cup of tea or a glass of wine.
The truth is, no matter what you do, no matter what you say, someone will always have an opinion about you and someone will always think you are too much of whatever they feel they want to say.
It is impossible to stay worried about what might be said—we just have to let it go. Never give anyone the power to affect your life.
You do not have to apologize for being who you are—there is a reason behind it all. Be proud of what you have accomplished while striving to do more right.
It does not matter if others say you are too much. What matters is if you know you are too much. And most of the time, you really are not.
People who genuinely love you will love you for exactly who you are. They will accept you for what you stand for. The only opinion that matters in your life is your own.
You have the power to be whoever you want to be.
